What were your challenges?
The old Scout building was over 50 years old and not in great condition. We wanted to improve the viability and sustainability of the hall in order to attract more young people into the group. Demand for Beaver and Club places in the local area outstrips availability, and the current hall could not accommodate all the children who wanted to attend, and we could only accommodate one activity at a time. We therefore decided to replace our building with a budget replacement cost of £2.1m.

What are your plans in 2021?
Firstly, restarting our section meetings – we were delighted to welcome the Scouts back in mid-April. Next, the Scouts are looking to raise the balance of the building costs (£175,000 as of May 2021 with approximately £1.8m raised!). During 2020 we were hoping to run fundraising events but due to Covid-19 these could not happen. This year our scouts have their own collection boxes to help raise funds. They have also launched a new badge unique to Amersham Scouts and are hoping to arrange a street collection and online auction, with a parent committee working on other fundraising activities.
We have also installed a climbing wall at one end of the hall and we need to train climbing instructors.
What difference have The Clare Foundation made to you and your Charity/Business?
The new hall recently completed in December 2020 can now hold 3 activities to accommodate all the sections. The hall is now open for the children to attend and is also attracting other community groups who can hire the hall which enables us to benefit from additional income streams and serve the community. We are really pleased the children can return to provide social and fun activities for them to enjoy.
“The whole community have come together to support this project and that’s what I have loved about it. We want to say a big thank you to The Clare Foundation for financially supporting us and taking the time out to visit and learn more about what we do.” says Gary Grant, Supporter of the Scouts.
Martin Gallagher. CEO. The Clare Foundation says “The Amersham Scout Hall has been a significant development in the community and the facility is just fantastic, both the indoor and outdoor areas I am sure will be put to good use by the Scouts & Cubs and many children and young people from in and around Amersham in the years to come. I have no doubt that there will be many other events for people of all ages and backgrounds to use these facilities and create a stronger community bond”.
“The Scout Hall in Amersham is an integral part of the local community and I am delighted that The Clare Foundation is able to provide financial support for this fantastic facility opening soon. Gary has been relentless in ‘bending my ear’ and generally persuading the local ‘great and good’ to make this project happen and through sheer determination, Gary (and others) have achieved a remarkably equipped building that will be of significant use to both the young and older generations of Amersham.” Mike Clare, Founder & Chairman, The Clare Foundation
